Obtained First Class Hons. degree in Mathematics, and MSc in Medical Statistics
and Information Technology, at University of Leicester. Graduate Member,
Institute of Mathematics and its Applications; Fellow, Royal Statistical
Society. Appointed MRC Scientist in Medical Statistics, Clinical Research
Centre, Harrow. Worked in a team of statisticians with great diversity in
expertise, advising and collaborating with basic and clinical scientists
on design of experiments, analysis and presentation. Main coherent association
was with Drs RJ Dobbs, SM Dobbs, Clive Weller of the Therapeutics Research
Group: we developed a particular interest in use of statistical modelling
to explore therapeutic/preventative interventions and generate hypothesis
on causation of disease. Had mathematical role in design of computer software
for objective assessments of features of parkinsonism. In 1993, appointed
as a Principal Statistician at the Public Health Laboratory Service, London.
In 2002, appointed Head of Statistics Unit of, what is now, the Health Protection
Agency. Epidemiological work has focused on local and national surveillance,
assessing and developing policies and practice in relation to hospital-
and community-acquired infection, and evaluating laboratory procedures.
This has provided insights, and developed my expertise, for the 'What’s
Driving Parkinson’s programme' on parkinsonism, as Hon. Senior Lecturer
at the Institute of Psychiatry. With core team have used statistical modeling
to generate a coherent, hierarchical, biological-plausible hypothesis on
the causation and propogation of idiopathic parkinsonism.
