I joined the ‘What’s Driving Parkinson’s?’ team
five years ago, with 30 years experience in information systems and services
management. My wife, Jean, was diagnosed with PD ten years ago. As a carer,
as well as a science graduate member of the team, I know that funding this
work can quickly deliver an improvement in quality of life to Parkinson’s
sufferers and their families. Prior to moving her treatment to the research
clinic, Jean had six-monthly check-ups which always resulted with an increase
in her single prescribed medication, pushing her into the side effects associated
with very high dosage. There was no whole body approach to her condition,
or any systematic approach as to what driving forces might be reversible.
Operating on a shoe-string budget, the ‘What’s Driving Parkinson’s?’
work has clearly demonstrated that there is a better clinical approach to
treating this debilitating condition. What is now needed is the funding
to enable the planned work to proceed at maximum speed and achieve its objectives
of eradicating the misery caused by PD.
