Likely impact, importance and reason for pursuing here and now:

Both life expectancy, and the age-specific incidence of Parkinson’s disease in older people, is increasing. The pre-presentation state may never come to diagnosis, but undoubtedly limits personal potential and career. Frank disease of early onset does not just limit, but can shatter career prospects. Family and peer group clusters are a source of concern.

One can choose either to turn over the dry bones of previous research, or take a radical new look at this disease. The team’s approach and strategy are unique on a world basis, and backed up by outstanding expertise. The work is exciting, with motivation running high. However, the momentum is not sustainable on a shoestring!
